Who is responsible for the maintenance of my smoke detector?

Per City Ordinance 40.153, the residents of one and two family residential dwellings shall, once a month for other than battery-powered smoke detectors and not less than once a week for battery-powered smoke detectors, perform tests or inspections, as recommended by the manufacturer of the detector. If batteries are used as a source of energy they shall be replaced twice yearly or in accordance with the recommendations of the alarm equipment manufacturer, whichever constitutes or sets forth the lesser amount of time for battery usage. Smoke detectors found to be inoperative shall be replaced with approved detectors in accordance with N.F.P.A. Standard 72.
